The cost
It does cost some money to store your backups and let people send you messages while you are on an airplane.
You pay this directly to a hosting provider for an always-on server, and to a domain registrar for your handle (you@yourdomain.com). We are not involved or informed.

Freedom to move
You can move anytime. Your identity is not an account anywhere or even your handle, but a cryptographic key kept only on your devices. Your server never holds a copy, and neither do we.
Unhappy with your hosting provider? Switch, restore, carry on. The people who write to you will not notice.
Fauna is in closed alpha. Apps for iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows, Linux, the web and the terminal are on their way. The source code will be released soon.
